Delivering his remarks after administering the oath of office, Justice Amonoo-Monney described the Endowment Trust Fund Board as a “special and peculiar” one with a broad composition of high-calibre professionals drawn from various disciplines to bring expertise, commitment and innovation to the management of the Fund. He explained that the large membership of the board, as stipulated under Statute 39 of the UEW Statutes, signifies the strategic importance of the Fund to the University’s long-term development.
According to him, the Fund is intended to provide sustainable financial support for the University’s academic and infrastructural development at a time when public tertiary institutions are increasingly cash-strapped. He urged members to work conscientiously, guided by principles of integrity, humility, honesty and faithfulness to ensure prudent management of the Fund for the benefit of generations of UEW students.
“The oath you swore was not to me, but to the Almighty God in whom you believe. And if God is your helper, can you fail? You are performing a function for God, our country, Ghana, as established by law and the University of Education, Winneba. Therefore, I pray that you bring your best to bear on this noble assignment,” he said.
Justice Amonoo-Monney further reiterated UEW’s vision “to be an internationally reputable institution for teacher education and research” and its mission to train competent professional teachers for all levels of education while conducting research and contributing to educational policy and development. He emphasised that the Endowment Trust Fund aligns with this mission by ensuring judicious utilisation and management of resources in line with the University’s core values of good corporate governance, teamwork, service to community, and environmental responsibility.
He commended the inclusion of two alumni representatives on the board, describing it as a reflection of the importance the University places on its graduates’ continuous involvement in institutional growth. He expressed confidence that the management of the University would provide the enabling environment for the board to perform its duties effectively.
Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, lauded the establishment of the Fund, describing it as a crucial pillar for financing the University’s projects and initiatives. He noted that endowment funds remain one of the most reliable means of financing universities globally and could play a transformative role in UEW’s development.
“Universities in advanced countries rely heavily on endowment funds as one of their greatest financing pillars. Given the composition of this board and the calibre of its members, achieving our mission should not be difficult at all,” he stated.
Prof. Mitchual pointed out that UEW with its over 33 years of existence and more than 165,000 alumni, has the potential to raise significant resources through alumni contributions to the Fund. He assured the board of management’s commitment to providing the necessary resources and institutional support to facilitate its work.
Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo, Registrar of the University, in outlining the statutory basis for the Fund, explained that Statute 39 of the UEW 2020 statutes mandates the Endowment Trust Fund Board to administer and develop policies for the management of the Fund. She announced that the board’s first official meeting had been scheduled for 21st October, 2025, where members would deliberate on operational strategies to ensure alignment with the University’s mission and vision.
Speaking on behalf of the UEW Alumni Association, its President and a member of the board, Dr. Samuel Ofori Danquah, affirmed the alumni’s commitment to supporting the Endowment Fund. He disclosed that efforts were underway to reorganise and re-register alumni members to enhance participation and financial contributions towards the Fund.
“We hold ourselves accountable for making UEW a proud institution. Our members are proud to be associated with UEW and are working hard to channel that renewed enthusiasm into direct contributions to the Endowment Fund from outside the University community,” he affirmed.
The inauguration ceremony concluded with a collective expression of optimism from both management and board members that the Fund would become a beacon of financial strength, positioning UEW to sustain its mandate of training competent professional teachers and advancing education in Ghana and beyond.
