UEW Staff Keep Fit in Cohesion
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), in an effort to build bonds and the physical well-being of its staff, has organised fun games for all the workers of the university.
The fun games, dubbed "The Registrar’s Cup", were held on Thursday, 20th and Friday, 21st July, 2023, at the Hockey Pitch and volleyball court of the university's North Campus in Winneba. The male staff of the university engaged in football while the females played volleyball.
The Security, Finance and Audit, Health and Sanitation, Transport and Estate, UTAG, Registry, Works and Maintenance, and Library and IT teams were the eight that competed in the football games. The eight teams were grouped into two, each with four teams.
Group A comprised Security, Finance and Audit, Health and Sanitation, and Transport and Estate. Group B also comprised UTAG, Registry, Works and Maintenance, as well as Library and IT.
The teams played each other in a round-Robin format to produce a group winner to face off the winner from the other group. The first runner-ups from each group also battled for the third place.
Health and Sanitation topped Group A with seven points, followed by Security with five points. In the other group, Registry placed first with eight points, with UTAG placing second with seven points on the log.
In the third-placed game, Security was billed to take on UTAG. However, UTAG did not show up for the match. Consequently, Security was declared the winner of the match after waiting on the pitch for the entirety of the first half.
Health and Sanitation locked horns with Registry in a fierce final match. The game ended goalless in regulation time. Health and Sanitation beat Registry 2-1 on the penalty shootouts to emerge ultimate winner of the football competition.
The UEW Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Victor Antwi, presented the trophy to the football competition's champions and pleaded with the employees to maintain the bonds of solidarity they had forged and work towards a better future to achieving the mission and vision of the university. He commended Team Health and Sanitation for winning the 2023 Registrar's Cup despite bouncing back from dropping points in their first game of the competition.
On volleyball, only two teams, Blue and Red, competed. Team Blue, consisting of administrators, defeated Team Red, made up of teaching staff, in three straight sets to emerge champions.
The second in a series of events, the two-day gathering of university staff from the diverse sections of the university community, is intended to help staff of the university stay physically active, motivated, have fun, and build enduring bonds to pursue the university's mission and vision.
