UEW Matriculates 8,300 Distance Education Students for 2024/2025 Academic Year

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has formally admitted 8,300 new students into its College for Distance and e-Learning (CODeL) and the Institute for Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development (ITECPD) for the 2024/2025 academic year.
The matriculation ceremony, held at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus, UEW, blended in-person and virtual participation to accommodate students from various study centres across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah, Acting Registrar of UEW, underscored the significance of the event, stating that matriculation confers official membership on new students. She reiterated the need for all admitted students to complete their registration process to gain full access to academic resources, including study materials and examination privileges.
“The university statutes require that every admitted student undergo matriculation to be formally recognised as a junior member of the institution. I urge those who have not yet completed their registration to do so as soon as possible to ensure smooth access to all academic facilities,” Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah said.

Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, highlighted the institution’s commitment to improving distance learning through digital transformation and academic expansion. He noted that 11,570 applications were received for the 2024/2025 academic year, of which 10,374 applicants were offered admission, with 8,300 completing their registration.
Prof. Mitchual also announced that UEW had successfully enrolled the first batch of students into the newly introduced Bachelor of Arts in German Education programme, with eight pioneering students starting their academic journey.
To enhance academic services for distance learners, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed key initiatives, including the migration of student records onto the Online Student Information System (OSIS) and the implementation of a Learning Management System (LMS). He added that the OSIS migration would streamline academic record accessibility, while the LMS would provide interactive digital resources and virtual classrooms.
“The IT Directorate and Materials Unit are working towards transitioning from paper-based learning materials to an interactive online delivery system. This will provide students with digital textbooks, online tutorials, and access to the university’s e-library,” he stated.
Prof. Mitchual further revealed that UEW is in the process of securing accreditation for new Master’s programmes through distance learning, including a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with specialisations in Procurement, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Finance, and Accounting, as well as a Master of Education (M.Ed.) with specialisations in Political Science, Geography, Early Grade, and Basic Education.

Addressing the matriculants, Prof. Mitchual advised them to manage their time effectively, prioritise their studies, and adhere to university regulations.
“Time is your most valuable resource. Attend tutorials regularly, form study groups, and take advantage of digital learning tools. Additionally, any concerns should be addressed through the university’s internal procedures rather than external interventions,” he cautioned.
The ceremony concluded with the administration of the matriculation oath, formally inducting the new students into the university community. With these developments, UEW continues to strengthen its role in advancing higher education accessibility in Ghana through distance learning innovations and academic excellence.
