Lecturers from the Department of Geography Education, University of Education, Winneba (UEW), have been awarded two different research grants to conduct research related to environmental sanitation in Ghana.

The grants are to be used to carry out spatial-enabled sustainable solid waste management system as well as a study on the viability and environmental implications of plastic waste buy-back schemes in Ghana.

The first project aims to provide a spatial-enabled solid waste management system that will facilitate the inclusion and cooperation of informal and formal waste managers through web-based and mobile applications to improve the identification of clients (households) and waste infrastructure. It also seeks to model routes with the lowest cost to ensure waste collection efficiency.

The second project explores the viability of plastic waste buy-back schemes as a key component of the plastic waste recycling value chain and its concomitant effects on environmental sustainability in Ghana.

Dr. Adams Osman leads the first project with Dr. Enoch F. Sam, Dr. Francis Taale (School of Economics, University of Cape Coast) and Mr. Prince Kwame Odame whereas Dr. Esther Danso-Wiredu also leads the second project with Dr. Benedict Arko, Dr. Victor Owusu and Dr. Yaw Agyeman Boafo (Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Studies, University of Ghana).

The grants were awarded by the Africa Environmental Sanitation Consult (AfES) and funded by the Jospong Group of Companies. The two awards were among 26 grants awarded under the Environmental Sanitation Research Fund.
