Factors influencing sign language interpretation service in Ghana: The interpreters’ perspective

This study explored the factors influencing sign language interpreting services in Ghana from the perspectives of practicing interpreters. Using a qualitative approach, 14 sign language interpreters were purposively selected from the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) Sign Language Interpreters Directory and interviewed until data saturation was reached. The data were analysed thematically using an inductive approach. The findings revealed that although there were practicing sign language interpreters in Ghana, none had received formal professional qualifications in sign language interpreting; however, all participants were pursuing diploma-level training in Ghanaian Sign Language Interpretation. The study further identified several challenges affecting interpreting services, including widespread misunderstanding of interpreters' professional roles by event organisers, misconceptions among some deaf individuals regarding interpreters' responsibilities, and the absence of a strong professional interpreters' association to provide legal and professional protection. The authors recommend strengthening interpreter associations, introducing university programmes in sign language interpretation, and increasing public education on the roles of sign language interpreters to improve the quality and sustainability of interpreting services in Ghana.
