2nd Session of 30th Congregation: UEW Valedictorian Celebrates Resilience, Inclusivity and Academic Excellence
Mr. Mifetu Sunday, Valedictorian of the Second Session of the 30th Congregation of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has praised the University for its commitment to inclusive and transformative education.
He highlighted how distance learning continues to create opportunities while fostering resilience and academic excellence among students.
Speaking at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre in Winneba on Thursday, 23rd April, 2026, Mr. Sunday described the graduation as more than the conferment of certificates but a testament to perseverance, sacrifice and determination among students who overcame significant personal and academic challenges to succeed.
He highlighted the demanding journey of many graduates, particularly those enrolled in UEW’s distance education programme, noting that students had to balance academic work with employment, family responsibilities and personal struggles. Despite these pressures, he emphasised that their success reflects “not perfection but resilience,” positioning UEW graduates as individuals equipped with strength and determination to contribute meaningfully to society.
Mr. Sunday expressed appreciation for the University of Education, Winneba's (UEW) inclusive educational framework, highlighting its strong commitment to supporting distance learners. He noted that the University provided equal opportunities and support systems that enabled non-traditional students to excel academically. According to him, this inclusive philosophy demonstrates that “talent does not live only in lecture halls but wherever someone is willing to learn,” reinforcing UEW’s role as a leader in accessible higher education.
The Valedictorian further praised the University’s academic reward schemes, describing them as a strong motivation for students to strive for excellence. He noted that recognising academic performance celebrates achievement, inspires healthy competition and encourages self-improvement, ultimately raising standards across the institution.
Highlighting the importance of student support systems, Mr. Sunday expressed appreciation to UEW lecturers, staff and Study Centre Coordinators for their dedication and commitment. He particularly acknowledged the critical role of Coordinators in guiding students, resolving challenges and ensuring a conducive learning environment. He noted that their efforts went beyond administrative duties to reflect genuine leadership and care for student success.
Reflecting on the broader impact of education, Mr. Sunday urged his fellow graduates to view their degrees not merely as certificates but as tools for leadership, service and societal transformation. He encouraged them to remain bold in pursuing opportunities, committed to lifelong learning and dedicated to making meaningful contributions to their communities.
He further called on graduates to uphold values of humility, responsibility and service, stressing that education carries an obligation to inspire change and improve lives. According to him, the challenges ahead present opportunities for innovation and impact and graduates must be prepared to lead with integrity and purpose.
The address also carried a strong message of gratitude and reflection, as the Valedictorian acknowledged the sacrifices and support of families, friends and mentors who contributed to the success of students. He emphasised that behind every graduate is a story of perseverance and collective effort, reinforcing the importance of community in academic achievement.
The ceremony formed part of UEW’s 30th Congregation, a milestone event celebrating the academic accomplishments of students across various programmes. The University continues to position itself as a centre of excellence in teacher education and professional development.
Mr. Sunday concluded by calling on graduates to honour their journeys by living purposeful lives and contributing positively to society while reaffirming confidence in the future impact of UEW graduates on Ghana and beyond.
