UEW Supports Outstanding Needy Students with VC's Scholarship Award
The Scholarship Committee of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) hosted the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund Award Ceremony at the North Campus Mini-Conference Room. 126 students were honoured for their academic excellence and supported in overcoming financial barriers to education.
The ceremony, held on Thursday, 19th March, 2026, saw the Vice-Chancellor formally present awards to beneficiaries for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic years, reaffirming UEW’s commitment to equity, access and student success.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, the Vice-Chancellor, described the scholarship scheme as a strategic intervention designed to ease the financial burden on brilliant but needy students.
Prof. Mitchual noted that the initiative aligns with the university’s strategic objective of expanding opportunities for underprivileged and marginalised groups including persons with disability and students from less endowed schools. He further linked the scheme to global development priorities, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4 which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education. He commended the Scholarship Committee for its diligence and transparency in selecting deserving candidates.
The Vice-Chancellor charged beneficiaries to justify the confidence reposed in them by demonstrating discipline, academic excellence and integrity. He emphasised the importance of attending lectures, meeting academic deadlines, utilising university learning resources and maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. He cautioned that any form of misconduct could lead to withdrawal of the scholarship.
Prof. Mitchual further urged the students to serve as ambassadors of UEW and agents of change in society, encouraging them to take advantage of the opportunity to develop into globally conscious and socially responsible individuals capable of making meaningful contributions to national development.
Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo, the Registrar, reiterated UEW’s mandate as a leading teacher education institution committed to training competent professionals for Ghana and beyond. She explained that the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund, established in 2016, was designed to ensure that more qualified students could overcome financial constraints to achieve their dreams. She highlighted that the initiative reflects the University’s broader commitment to nurturing high-calibre students and preparing them as the institution’s ambassadors.
Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo provided an overview of the transparent and competitive selection process. This process encompasses advertising and inviting applications as well as conducting a thorough assessment of qualified candidates. She congratulated the beneficiaries for meeting the stringent criteria and encouraged them to see the award as a stepping stone to greater laurels.
A beneficiary, Ms. Emmanuella Ofeibea Gagba, shared a testimony on the transformative impact of the scholarship, noting that the financial support had enabled her to fully concentrate on her studies without interruptions. She encouraged fellow awardees to make prudent use of the opportunity to excel academically and bring honour to the university and the nation.
Another beneficiary, Mr. Benjamin Donkor, recounted how the scholarship had saved his academic journey following personal financial challenges after the loss of his father. He expressed gratitude to the university, stating that the intervention had given him renewed hope and the determination to succeed and uphold the values of UEW.
Mr. Stephen Osei Akyiaw, the President of the UEW Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UEW), commended the University Management for sustaining the initiative, describing it as a credible and impactful intervention that reaches genuinely needy students. He encouraged beneficiaries to work hard and support the University’s vision through their academic dedication and conduct.
Dr. Samuel Arko-Mensah, a lecturer at the Department of Theatre Arts of UEW, advised the students not to take the opportunity for granted, urging them to remain focused and committed to their studies. He reminded them that their background should not limit their potential, stressing that the scholarship catalyses true merit and academic success.
The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund continues to stand as a testament to UEW’s commitment to promoting access, equity and excellence in higher education while empowering students to overcome socio-economic barriers and realise their full potential.
