Addressing the ceremony, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor, welcomed the matriculants to the University and congratulated them on earning admission into an institution that has become synonymous with excellence in teacher education and human resource development in Ghana and beyond. He described the occasion as a defining moment in the students’ academic journey, signifying their transition into a community of learning, innovation and service.

Prof. Mitchual explained that matriculation remains one of the most significant rites of passage in the University tradition, marking the formal admission of students into the academic fraternity after fulfilling all necessary requirements. By taking the matriculation oath, he said, the students commit themselves to upholding the University’s values, abiding by its rules and pursuing their studies diligently. He assured them that the University, in turn, pledges to safeguard their welfare and provide a conducive environment for academic excellence and personal growth.

He revealed that for the 2024/2025 academic year, the University received a significant number of applications across its undergraduate and postgraduate sandwich programmes. Among the 571 applicants who received admission offers, 348 students successfully enrolled including 107 undergraduate and 241 postgraduate students. He observed that this figure, though modest, reflects the growing confidence that applicants have in UEW’s programmes and its continued commitment to promoting access, inclusiveness  and quality in higher education.

The Vice-Chancellor underscored the University’s strategic focus on critical areas such as teacher education, counselling and educational leadership which are essential for strengthening Ghana’s human capital base. He reminded the matriculants that their admission was not only a personal achievement but also a call to contribute meaningfully to national development through the power of education. “At UEW, our mission goes beyond teaching; we aim to develop individuals who will inspire change, promote innovation and uphold values of integrity and service,” he emphasised.

Prof. Mitchual urged the new students to approach their studies with seriousness, discipline and commitment. He advised them to take advantage of the academic and extracurricular opportunities the University offers, seek guidance from their lecturers, and cultivate habits of hard work and integrity. “Excellence is a habit, not an event. Uphold the values of respect and diligence and avoid shortcuts such as examination malpractices or plagiarism; they rob you of the true value of education,” he cautioned.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to parents and guardians for entrusting their wards to the University, assuring them that UEW would nurture them into responsible and competent graduates. He encouraged the fresh students to make the most of their time at UEW, reminding them that the journey ahead requires perseverance, self-discipline and a sense of purpose. “As you take the matriculation oath today, let it be a declaration of purpose and a promise to strive for excellence,” he said.

Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo, Registrar of the University, in her remarks, also congratulated the matriculants and welcomed them to the UEW community. She reiterated that matriculation is a significant academic ritual that officially admits students as junior members of the University. She clarified that formal recognition as a UEW student only occurs after participating in this ceremony and signing the matriculation register.

Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo advised the new students to familiarise themselves with the University’s statutes, rules and regulations and to conduct themselves in accordance with its standards of discipline and academic excellence. She reminded them that their conduct, both on and off campus, should project the good image of the University and contribute positively to its reputation. She encouraged them to make productive use of the facilities and opportunities available at UEW to ensure that their stay becomes a blessing to themselves, their families  and the nation.

“Your stay on this campus will be governed by the laws of the University as well as those of our motherland. Study the rules carefully, work hard and uphold the good name of the University at all times,” she advised.

The 2024/2025 Sandwich Matriculation Ceremony reaffirmed UEW’s commitment to expanding access to quality teacher education and lifelong learning opportunities for educators across Ghana and beyond. As the fresh students embark on their academic journey, the University remains steadfast in its mission to train competent professional educators who will contribute to Ghana’s transformation through education.
