The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed the University of Education, Winneba’s (UEW) vital role in moulding Ghana’s human capital and driving national transformation.

Representing Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education, Dr. Emmanuel Newman, Director of Tertiary Education, delivered a message of solidarity, appreciation and renewed partnership during the first session of UEW’s 30th Congregation on Friday, 28th November, 2025.

Dr. Newman conveyed the Minister’s deep regard for UEW as “a national treasure” whose influence on teacher education extends beyond Ghana. He noted that although the Minister was keen to attend, unavoidable national duties prevented his presence. He assured the University community of the Minister’s continuous support and admiration for UEW’s leadership in teacher training, innovation and educational development.

Reflecting on the essence of congregation, he described the ceremony as a symbolic moment of celebration, transition and renewed purpose. He commended graduates for their resilience, discipline and dedication throughout their academic journeys. He further acknowledged the sacrifices of parents, guardians, lecturers and staff who guided and supported graduates to this defining point.

Speaking on the University’s national mandate, Dr. Newman reiterated UEW’s central responsibility in producing competent, professional educators capable of transforming Ghana’s education system.

Highlighting UEW’s core pillars—teacher preparation, educational research, leadership development and innovation—he stressed that the institution is expected to lead national reforms and drive advancements in teaching, learning and pedagogical practice. “All innovations in education should come from the heart of this institution,” he stated, emphasising UEW’s uniqueness as the country’s foremost teacher-education university.

He noted that UEW must remain at the forefront of addressing critical educational challenges including curriculum development, teacher capacity building, inclusive education, language policy, digital learning, the AI revolution and school leadership. He urged the University to scale up its research contributions as evidence-based solutions remain vital to the transformation of Ghana’s educational landscape.

He humorously remarked on the rise of artificial intelligence while encouraging ethical academic practice and responsible use of new tools.

Dr. Newman commended the University’s leadership for sustained progress in quality enhancement, postgraduate training, digital innovation and efforts to improve employability among its graduates. He assured the University of the Ministry’s partnership in advancing strategic goals to improve learning outcomes, strengthen professional standards and expand technical and vocational education nationwide.

Addressing the graduating class, he charged them to embrace their roles as educators, leaders and nation builders. He encouraged them to teach with passion, innovate boldly, lead with humility and serve with integrity.

He urged graduands to explore diverse pathways in administration, research, public service, the military, law and other sectors, stressing that their UEW training offers a foundation for boundless possibilities. “Among you, I see future headmasters, lawyers, army officers, hallmasters, administrators, bank managers and vice chancellors,” he said, reassuring them that opportunities abound for those who remain focused and determined.

Using his own career journey as an example, Dr. Newman encouraged the graduates not to despair in moments of uncertainty, emphasising that persistence, adaptability and faith remain key to navigating the world of work. He reminded them that the mission of a teacher extends beyond classrooms to shaping character, inspiring future generations and building the intellectual foundation for every profession.

He encouraged graduates to let their light shine wherever they serve—whether in classrooms, communities, administration, research or public service—and urged all stakeholders to continue prioritising education as a cornerstone of national progress.

Dr. Newman concluded by reiterating the Minister’s admiration for UEW’s steadfast commitment to its mandate. He expressed appreciation to faculty, administrators, parents and guardians for their invaluable contributions to national development through education. “Thank you for being Ghana’s heartbeat for teacher education. Thank you for shaping the next generation,” he said.
