SPED-UEW Partners Multikids to Support Learners with Sensory Needs

The Department of Special Education (SPED) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in collaboration with Multikids Inclusive Academy has organised a hands-on Sensory Training Workshop to equip educators with practical tools to support the sensory needs of learners in diverse and inclusive educational settings.
Held at the Multikids Inclusive Academy in East Legon, the training was part of UEW’s continuous commitment to promoting inclusive education and empowering teachers with relevant strategies to support learners with special needs.
The workshop was led by Mrs. Florence Akua Mensah, Head of SPED and Madam Amanda Budge, Founder of Multikids Inclusive Academy with facilitation by Claire Skinner, a specialist in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Participants included professionals from a wide array of institutions such as Dzorwulu Special School, Hopesetters Autism Center, Castle Road Special School, AwaaWaa2+ Special School, Salvation Army School for the Deaf, Brain Hill International School and International Community School (ICS). Faculty members, alumni and Level 200 to 400 students from SPED also took part in the workshop alongside special education nurses and teaching assistants.
The session focused on developing a deeper understanding of sensory processing and its impact on teaching and learning. Through engaging activities, live demonstrations, and expert-led discussions, participants explored strategies for recognising and addressing diverse sensory preferences and challenges among learners with special needs.

A key highlight of the event was a reflective experience-sharing session where seasoned educators recounted real-life challenges and shared effective classroom practices. This fostered peer learning and offered practical solutions for creating inclusive learning environments. Notably, the workshop also identified a cohort of future trainers of trainees, ensuring sustainability and capacity-building within the education system.
This initiative reflects UEW’s mission to lead in teacher education through collaboration, innovation and inclusion—reaffirming its role as a champion of equitable and accessible learning for all.
