UEW Holds Strategic Meeting with University of Massachusetts Delegation

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has held a strategic meeting with a delegation from the University of Massachusetts, United States of America, as part of efforts to strengthen academic collaboration between the two institutions.

The engagement, held at UEW, was within the framework of an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed three years ago with a focus on staff and student exchange, joint research, teaching collaboration and capacity building.

Welcoming the delegation, Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, Principal of the College for Distance and e-Learning (CODeL), stated that the meeting reflected UEW’s commitment to sustaining mutually beneficial international partnerships. He noted that global collaboration was essential in enhancing teaching, learning and research, particularly in a rapidly interconnected academic environment. He reaffirmed UEW’s readiness to strengthen the partnership and ensure that ongoing and future programmes deliver tangible benefits to both institutions.

Prof. Charles Assuah, Dean of the Centre for International Programmes (CIP), provided an overview of the partnership, explaining that the collaboration has facilitated academic exchange and the implementation of joint programmes. He announced that the first cohort of students enrolled in the Sustainable Energy in Africa certificate programme had completed the programme with a second cohort currently undergoing training. He emphasised that the partnership was anchored on reciprocity and shared academic goals.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of UEW Management, Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo, Registrar, stressed the university’s commitment to deepening international cooperation. She encouraged both institutions to expand collaboration in areas such as joint research, grant acquisition and student exchange, noting that such partnerships were critical to addressing global educational and development challenges.

Speaking for the visiting team, Prof. Jennifer Whitten Woodring, leader of the delegation and Dean of the Honors College at the University of Massachusetts, expressed appreciation for UEW’s hospitality and described the collaboration as a valuable platform for academic and cultural exchange. She highlighted the importance of exposing students to global perspectives and real-world challenges through international partnerships.

Also contributing, Prof. Robert H. Giles underscored the relevance of cross-border academic collaboration in addressing issues such as sustainable energy, food security and public health. He noted that partnerships of this nature promote innovation, cultural understanding and long-term institutional relationships.

The meeting underscores UEW’s commitment to internationalisation and its broader agenda of advancing teaching, research and global academic engagement.
