Biography
Professor Emma Sarah Eshun is a Professor of Language in the Department of Basic Education at the University of Education, Winneba, in Ghana. She is a language consultant and a professional teacher trainer in the English language and Linguistics. She has extensive experience in the teaching and learning of the English Language, linguistics, and language and literacy development in children, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as in Bilingual instructional pedagogies. Emma holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics from the University of Ghana, a Master of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics, and a Bachelor of Education in English Language, all from the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana.
Professor Eshun is the Director, Quality Assurance Directorate of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). She served as the Deputy Director, Quality Assurance Directorate of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) from 2023-2025, Post-graduate Programmes Coordinator for the Institute for Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development (ITECPD), and the Coordinator for Gender Equality and Social Inclusion for the fifteen (15) Colleges of Education affiliated to the University of Education, Winneba. She has also served as the Professional Development Coordinator for the Department of Basic Education. She has over 17 years of continuous experience in teaching and researching at the University. She has also worked on several research projects and served on various committees tasked with designing academic programmes, as well as working with different team members to develop College of Education Course manuals, literacy resource materials, professional development manuals, and the Resource Manual for Play-Based Learning.
She has extensive experience in curriculum development, including the New B.Ed College of Education Curriculum for Basic schools and the Secondary Education Curriculum for SHS. She served as a reviewer for the NEW English Language and Literature Curricula for Secondary Education, developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NACCA) of the Ghana Ministry of Education. Professor Eshun is a writer and editor for course module materials for the College of Open and Distance Learning (CODeL), University of Education, Winneba. She has been involved in several International, National, and local education development projects and conferences. She has been a lead researcher and engaged in several projects commissioned by various stakeholders of education, including UNESCO, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Transforming Teaching Education and Learning (T-TEL), NaCCA, Right to Play (LEGO Foundations), WAEC, OXFAM, and World Vision.
She has over 40 sources on language pedagogies, language policy of education, technology integration, media literacy in language, literacy development of the child, and teacher education. She also has 15 resource modules and manuals, including English Language Textbooks for teaching English. Her research interest is in bilingual language pedagogies, language policy of education, media literacy of young learners, and general educational issues. Also, in sub-domains of linguistics such as cognitive semantics, sociolinguistics, and language in various domains, as well as a focus on syntax and a special interest in the structure of Mfantse.
Professor Emma Sarah Eshun has experience in supervising students’ educational research projects and theses in the University for both undergraduate and post-graduate students. She is also an external thesis examiner for other sister Universities and an accreditation assessor for GTEC. She has facilitated several workshops, including Quality Assurance Policies and Standards, Post Graduate Writing Boot Camps, Post Examination Stakeholder Engagement Forum, Test Item Writing and Construction for Tutors of Affiliated Colleges of Education for the University of Education, and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion seminars. Emma has knowledge and experience on various virtual teaching platforms.
