UEW Student Donates Wheelchair to Fellow Student with Special Needs
A touching act of kindness and solidarity unfolded at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), when a second-year student celebrated his birthday by donating a brand-new wheelchair to a fellow student at Level 100, Mr. Ebenezer Gawu.
Mr. Ebenezer Annobil, a Level 200 student from the Department of Management Sciences, made the donation in partnership with the Annobil Foundation. The gesture was inspired by their encounters with Mr. Gawu, who navigates campus life using all four limbs due to his physical disability.
In an emotional presentation, Mr. Annobil shared that the act was prompted by deep reflection and gratitude to God for life and strength over the past year. “I am not doing this for recognition; it is an inner conviction and a way to express my appreciation to God for 365 days of life. This donation is my way of saying thank you to God and encouraging others to show love and compassion, no matter how small,” he said.
The surprised recipient, visibly moved, expressed sincere appreciation, stating he was unaware of the plans and had only been invited by his Head of Department to discuss an important matter. “May God Almighty bless this foundation,” he said, holding back emotion.
Prof. Sakina Acquah, Head of the Department of Basic Education, praised the initiative and urged students to always extend compassion where needed. “We may be born differently, but we are all equal. Do not hesitate to show kindness when the opportunity arises; it is in those moments that we touch lives and honour God,” she said.
Faculty, students, and representatives from the Basic Education Students’ Association (BESA) attended the presentation. The selfless act was celebrated not just as a birthday gesture but as a powerful reminder of the spirit of unity and love that should define campus life.
