Department of Social Studies Honours Two Icons
The Department of Social Studies Education at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has honoured two of its longstanding lecturers, Mr. Cletus Kolog-Ngaaso and Dr. Seth Peter Frimpong, for their dedicated service, mentorship and contributions to the development of the University community.
The two academics were celebrated at a special ceremony held on Thursday, 27th August, 2026, at the SEMSA Grounds, North Campus. Colleagues and members of the University community gathered to acknowledge their years of service and profound impact on both students and peers.
Prof. Isaac Eshun, Head of the Department of Social Studies Education, said the initiative was to celebrate these academics while they remain active members of the University, formally acknowledging the value of their ongoing contributions.
He described the honourees as exemplary personalities whose commitment to the Department had contributed significantly to its development. He noted that the celebration was also intended to encourage other departments to recognise and appreciate members whose service had advanced institutional growth.
Prof. Lucy Effeh Attom, Dean of the Faculty of Liberal and Social Studies Education, described the honourees as dedicated and selfless academics whose careers had been defined by professionalism, service and concern for others. She noted that both academics had progressed through different stages of their careers at UEW, from students of the Department of Social Studies to teaching assistants and eventually lecturers.
According to Prof. Lucy Attom, their contributions extended beyond classroom teaching to include supervision, guidance, counselling and mentorship, through which they had supported students and colleagues to overcome challenges and realise their potential.
She said Mr. Kolog-Ngaaso served the University in several administrative capacities including Departmental Examination Officer, Faculty Examination Officer and Head of Department, while Dr. Frimpong served as Head of the Centre for African Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Social Science Education.
Prof. Lucy Attom stressed that the true measure of service was not only the positions held or achievements recorded but also the positive difference made in the lives of others. She said the history and development of the Department of Social Studies Education could not be told without acknowledging the contributions of the two academics.
Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW, commended the Department for recognising the two lecturers. She described them as senior colleagues who had provided guidance, mentorship and support to younger academics.
Reflecting on her interactions with the honourees, Prof. Esther Danso-Wiredu described Mr. Kolog-Ngaaso as an embodiment of Social Studies who was accessible and always willing to offer advice. Similarly, she described Dr. Frimpong as approachable and supportive.
She expressed appreciation, on behalf of the University Management, for their contributions to UEW, the country and the many students they had taught and mentored.
Prof. Esther Danso-Wiredu wished the honourees long life and good health, expressing the hope that they would live to witness the continued progress and success of the people they had mentored.
The celebration featured projected messages and voice-overs from colleagues and members of the University community, who shared memories and reflections on their experiences with the two academics. Other celebrants also took turns to recount personal encounters and memorable moments with the honourees.
The ceremony highlighted the enduring value of dedicated service, mentorship, professionalism and institutional commitment in advancing the mission of UEW.
