BIOSSA Level 300 Students Lead Environmental Awareness Campaign at UEW
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Biological Science Students Association (BIOSSA) Level 300 students have organised an environmental awareness campaign on the theme “Clean Environment: A Collective Responsibility” at the forecourt of Ghartey Block A on Friday, 20th March, 2026, as part of their academic coursework.
The programme, which marked the climax of a practical, problem-solving project, highlighted pressing sanitation challenges on the South Campus and proposed sustainable solutions to curb environmental pollution.
Chairing the event, Mr. David Osam Acquaye, Head of the Department of Biology Education, underscored the centrality of a clean environment to students’ health, academic productivity and future well-being. He stressed that environmental sanitation is a shared and continuous responsibility for all members of the University community.
Prof. Arkoful Sam, Dean of the Faculty of Science Education, reinforced this call, describing cleanliness as mandatory rather than optional. He cautioned against indiscriminate littering on campus, hinting at future policy measures including surveillance and sanctions, to enforce environmental discipline. He commended the initiative as timely and impactful, urging students to adopt responsible waste management habits that will yield long-term benefits for both the University and society.
Dr. (Mrs.) Felicity Bentsi-Enchill, Course Lecturer, lauded the commitment and creativity of the students. She noted that the project exemplifies the integration of theory and practice by empowering students to apply classroom knowledge to address real-life environmental challenges.
The campaign featured educational drama and demonstrations on waste segregation, emphasising the distinction between persistent and non-persistent waste. As part of efforts to promote proper waste management, the students donated three recycling artefacts to the Faculty of Science Education, Ghartey Hall and Kwegyir Aggrey Hall. The beneficiary institutions pledged to utilise them effectively to support sustainable practices.
The programme also included the signing of an undertaking to affirm commitment to maintaining a clean campus environment.
Delivering the purpose of the event, Mr. Osei Agyeman-Prempeh, BIOSSA Level 300 Committee Chairperson noted that the project sought to expose environmental issues identified on campus and propose practical solutions to safeguard health and well-being. In a symbolic transition, Course Representative Prince Dagadu Atsu formally handed over the campaign to Level 200 students to ensure continuity. He urged them to sustain and improve the initiative in subsequent years.
The event concluded with a renewed call on the University community to embrace responsible environmental practices and uphold cleanliness as a collective duty essential for sustainable campus living.
