Abstract

Ghana’s educational structure fundamentally is a 6-3-3-4 system where Senior high school education spans three years for students, with about 863 senior high schools made up of about 562 public and 301 private schools. The main objective of the study was to examine the performance of Senior High Students in WASSE core subjects in Ghana. Longitudinal data from the West African Examination Council, which spans the period, from 2007 to 2017 was also employed in the study. Findings from the study showed a higher percentage of passes in Social studies and English Language than in Integrated Science and Mathematics in the four core courses; however, male students performed better in core Mathematics and Integrated Science than their female counterparts, while female students performed better in English Language and Social Studies than their male counterparts. The study recommends that the Government through the Ministry of Education should invest more in the training of Science and Mathematics teachers to improve performance in these papers.
