Introduction

The School of Creative Arts (SCA) was established to serve as a dynamic academic hub for the study, practice, and promotion of the creative arts, with a focus on both the performing arts (Music and Theatre) and the visual arts (Art Education, Graphic Design, Film and Television). Its creation responds to the evolving landscape of Ghana’s educational system and the need for innovative, interdisciplinary training in the arts.

The School is mandated to foster an intellectually stimulating environment where students and faculty engage critically and creatively with theories and practices at the intersection of artistic disciplines. Through a combination of studio-based practice, performance, theoretical inquiry, and scholarly research, the School aims to enrich the creative academic experience and contribute meaningfully to national and global conversations on arts education and cultural production.

In its pursuit of excellence in teaching, learning, research, and professional practice, the School of Creative Arts provides a solid foundation for innovation and knowledge creation in the arts. It is committed to nurturing students’ creative potential and guiding them toward academic and professional distinction in their chosen fields.

Graduates of the School are prepared to function effectively as educators at various academic levels, cultural managers, researchers, and professional artists/artistes capable of generating new ideas and responding to contemporary artistic and societal challenges. To achieve these aims, the School ensures that its academic departments are supported by efficient and responsive administrative structures.

Objectives of the School

The primary objective of the School of Creative Arts is to train highly qualified educators, practitioners, and researchers in the performing and visual arts. Central to this mission is the belief that an effective teacher of the creative arts must first and foremost be a practising artist or artiste.

In line with this philosophy, the School continues to revise and re-align its academic departments to reflect developments in artistic practice, educational theory, and contemporary technology. The School’s programmes are designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary to engage meaningfully with current and future challenges in arts education and cultural practice.

Mission

The mission of the School of Creative Arts is to prepare students in the performing and visual arts to meet the demands of a rapidly changing and technologically driven world. The School is dedicated to ensuring that students excel academically while gaining critical awareness and interdisciplinary knowledge essential for thoughtful, skilled, and innovative artistic engagement.

Through its academic structures, the School seeks to develop specialists who are not only competent in their artistic fields but also informed by a broad base of general and professional knowledge. The School is equally committed to providing responsive and valuable administrative support to enhance academic delivery and research productivity.

Vision

The School of Creative Arts aspires to be a Centre of Excellence for the training of arts practitioners, educators, and culturally grounded artists and artistes who can contribute meaningfully to schools, communities, and creative industries. It seeks international recognition as a leading institution for research, teaching, and the promotion of African arts and culture, both locally and globally.

Through its programmes, the School aims to inculcate in students the requisite knowledge, creative competencies, and research skills needed to excel in various art disciplines and educational contexts across Ghana and beyond.

Faculty Journal

The School of Creative Arts publishes a faculty-based academic journal, The Journal of African Arts & Culture (JAAC). JAAC is a peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly platform dedicated to critical dialogue on African arts and culture. The journal is committed to publishing and disseminating high-quality, original research that underscores the transformative significance of the arts in African societies, both past and present.

With an interdisciplinary orientation, the journal features cutting-edge scholarship in ancient, modern, and contemporary African visual and performing arts. JAAC welcomes diverse contributions, including research articles, critical essays, interviews, exhibition and book reviews, short reports, and creative critiques. The journal reflects the School’s commitment to thought leadership and academic excellence in the creative arts.
