UEW Basic School Commemorates Workers' Day with an Experiential Learning Tour
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Basic School commemorated this year’s International Workers' Day with an innovative educational excursion intended to expose pupils to the practical roles of essential public service institutions within the Winneba community.
The school organised a guided tour to three key institutions comprising the Winneba High Court, the Divisional Police Headquarters and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). The initiative was part of the school’s broader commitment to experiential learning and community engagement, aligning with its philosophy of blending academic knowledge with real-world experience.
At the Winneba High Court, pupils were received by judicial staff including the presiding judge, registrar and legal practitioners present at the time of the visit. The officials engaged the learners in an interactive session, offering insights into the workings of the judiciary, the administration of justice and the roles of various legal professionals. The visit provided pupils with a foundational understanding of the court system and its significance in maintaining law and order.
The next stop was the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ateitu, a suburb of Winneba, where officers introduced the pupils to the structure and operations of the police service. The learners were taken on a tour of the facility and educated on procedures at the station. This included how cases are reported and handled. Police personnel emphasised the importance of discipline, civic responsibility and the role of the police in safeguarding lives and property.
The educational tour concluded at the GNFS Station in Winneba. Fire officers delivered engaging presentations on fire safety and emergency response. The officers highlighted the diverse responsibilities of the service including responding to road accidents, managing flood situations and addressing hazards such as bee infestations. Pupils were also given a demonstration of fire engines and equipment. This offered them a firsthand look at how emergency operations are conducted.
The May Day excursion celebrated the contributions of workers across various sectors and inspired pupils to appreciate the value of service and professionalism in nation-building. Interacting directly with professionals in their work environments, the learners gained practical knowledge and developed a deeper understanding of potential career paths.
The UEW Basic School’s initiative reflects the university’s commitment to holistic education, fostering informed and socially responsible citizens. This activity underscored the importance of connecting classroom learning with community-based experiences, a hallmark of UEW’s educational approach.
