Description

The Bachelor of Education Programme in Counselling Psychology (B.Ed. Counselling Psychology) is to train the required manpower needs for education sector and beyond. Counselling is the support services that are aimed at helping individuals discover, develop their educational, vocational and psychological potentials and thereby achieve an optimal level of personal satisfaction, happiness and social acceptance. The Bachelor of Education programme in Counselling Psychology, therefore, is relevant for the Ghanaian educational sector as it is intended to train and equip new counsellors to fill or bridge the huge student-counsellor gap in the second cycle schools and other related institutions where such services are required.

Prospects/Career Options

On completion, graduates of the Bachelor of Education in Counselling Psychology have job prospects such as:

  • Taking up teaching and guidance coordinating appointments in secondary and basic levels of education.
  • Working as counsellors in health facilities. 
  • Working in industry as human resource personnel assistants, public relations assistants.
  • Working in the security services as counsellors and human resource personnel 
  • Working as teaching assistants in universities and colleges of education and other institutions of higher education.
  • Working as research assistants for members of parliament (MPs) in government. 
  • Taking up appointments as counsellors at Domestic Violence and Victim Support Units (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.
  • Taking up appointments as counsellors in other governmental agencies such as the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

Entry Requirement

To enter the programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. WASSSCE
    Credit passes (A1- C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science, Social Studies, plus three (3) elective subjects.
  2. SSSCE
    Credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science, Social Studies, plus three (3) elective subjects.
  3. GCE ‘A’ Level
    Passes in three (3) subjects (at least one of the passes should be a grade D or better).  Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE ‘O’ Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and General Arts subject (for science students).
  4. Mature Students
    Applicants in this category may enter using mature students’ entrance examination (at 100 level). Applicants must be at least 25 years old by 1st September of the year preceding the examination.
  5. Foreign Applicants
    Foreign applicants must have qualifications equivalent to the above and must be able to read and write English.  Prospective applicants in this category should have their Certificates verified and authenticated by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

NB:  Applicants with special needs will be provided with special services to enable them undertake the programme.
