UEW Enhances Inclusive Education with Support from Ghana Gas
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Wednesday, 27th August 2025, received a donation of ten desktop computers, ten Bluetooth speakers and ten USB flash drives from the Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) in support of its Special Education Resource Centre.
The presentation at the Council Chamber of UEW reiterates the University’s commitment to inclusive education and highlights Ghana Gas’s dedication to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in education.
Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, expressed heartfelt appreciation to Ghana Gas for investing in the academic and social development of students with disabilities. He emphasised that UEW, as Ghana’s premier teacher education university, has a unique responsibility to champion inclusivity and ensure that all categories of learners receive equal opportunities to excel.
“UEW is the best teacher training university in Ghana and one of the things I pride myself on is the number of students with disabilities we have here. Ever since I assumed office, I have made it a priority to create a welcoming environment for them,” Prof. Mitchual remarked.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted his vision of establishing a fund to support students with disabilities in meeting their educational, accommodation and welfare needs. “Their problem should not be how to pay fees or find food; their focus should be on socialising and making the most of their studies,” he added.
He further called for strengthened partnerships with Ghana Gas and other stakeholders to support UEW’s ongoing efforts in developing a comprehensive, inclusive education complex that would serve students from across the Central Region and beyond.
Speaking on behalf of Ghana Gas, Mr. Isaac Ansah, Disability Officer and an alumnus of UEW, described the donation as a reaffirmation of the company’s commitment to empowering persons with disabilities. He stressed that the initiative formed part of Ghana Gas’s broader campaign to provide assistive technology and resources to inclusive schools and tertiary institutions nationwide. “Our donation to the University of Education, Winneba, is more than a symbolic gesture. It is a reaffirmation of our belief in the boundless potential of persons with disability when provided with the right tools and resources,” he noted.
He explained that the Ghana Gas Desktop Distribution Campaign had already distributed 145 computers to seven inclusive senior high schools and would continue with 30 more to tertiary institutions including UEW, the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast. Quoting the maxim, “A society grows great when its members plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in,” Mr. Ansah encouraged the students to maximise the use of the donated items. “These computers are not just devices; they are windows to a world of knowledge, innovation and possibilities. Use them to dream bigger, think creatively and lead boldly,” he urged.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Prince Adu Gyamfi, President of the Association of Students with Disabilities (ASD), UEW, expressed deep gratitude to Ghana Gas and the University’s leadership for their support. He described the donation as “a powerful statement of commitment to inclusive education” that would significantly enhance the academic and social lives of students with disabilities.
“This is a moment of great hope for us. It reinforces our belief that with the right support, there are no limits to what we can achieve,” Mr. Gyamfi said. While commending the gesture, he also appealed to Ghana Gas and other benevolent organisations to consider establishing a scholarship fund to ease the financial hardships many students with disabilities face. “By supporting our education, you will not only be funding individuals but also empowering future leaders, innovators and changemakers,” he added.
Dr. (Mrs.) Deborah Afful, Deputy Registrar at UEW’s Division of Academic Affairs, speaking on behalf of the University Management, assured Ghana Gas that the computers and accessories would be used effectively to benefit current and future students.
She also called on UEW alumni and partners to emulate Ghana Gas’s example by supporting the Special Education Resource Centre. “We are very grateful for this thoughtful gesture. It will go a long way to improve teaching and learning for our students with disabilities. We also look forward to more such collaborations in the future,” Dr. Deborah Afful affirmed.
The ceremony highlighted the synergy between academia, industry and civil society in addressing issues of equity and access in education. With this partnership, UEW continues to strengthen its philosophy of training teachers for all levels of education while Ghana Gas cements its role as a socially responsible corporate entity committed to inclusivity, empowerment, and national development.
