UEW Partners with eTranzact to Enhance ICT Education
The Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) and eTranzact Ghana Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote technological innovation, strengthen research collaboration and enhance the employability of students through practical industry experience in financial technology and mobile technology development.
The agreement was signed at the Council Chamber of the University on Thursday, 16th October, 2025.
The MoU, which spans a period of five years, forms part of eTranzact Ghana’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry.
Under the agreement, eTranzact Ghana will sponsor the Best Overall ICT Education Student of UEW with a total of GH₵10,000 over five years, beginning from the 2025/2026 academic year. The initiative will see each year’s overall best ICT Education student receiving GH₵2,000 as a reward for academic excellence.
Beyond sponsorship, eTranzact is committed to supporting UEW in five key areas: industrial training and development, internship and national service placements, sponsorship of a professorial chair, support for female students in technology and the establishment of an incubation hub on campus.
Under the industrial training and development component, the company will provide hands-on training for students in mobile technology development and electronic transactions to equip them with practical skills for the modern tech industry. Through the EduXcelerate Internship and National Service Programme, high-performing Level 300 students of the Department of ICT Education will be offered internships at eTranzact with exceptional candidates considered for national service placements and possible full-time employment.
Additionally, eTranzact pledged to sponsor a Professorial Chair in the Department of ICT Education for one year to promote academic excellence and research in ICT. The company also announced plans to introduce mentorship programmes for female students to encourage greater participation of women in technology-related fields and to collaborate with UEW to establish an incubation hub as a centre for innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Vice-Chancellor of UEW, lauded eTranzact Ghana for its forward-looking partnership and reaffirmed the University’s readiness to collaborate with industry players in preparing students for the world of work. He observed that the initiative aligns perfectly with the University’s strategic vision of producing problem-solving, work-ready graduates who can contribute meaningfully to national development.
Prof. Mitchual reflected on the importance of bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical exposure, stressing that public universities often grapple with large class sizes that limit close trainer-learner interaction and experiential learning. He compared this to smaller class settings in some private and foreign universities, where students benefit from more project-led, activity-based learning approaches that sharpen their critical thinking and practical problem-solving skills.
He commended the inclusion of internship and industrial training opportunities in the MoU, noting that such initiatives will greatly enhance students’ employability and confidence. “If we train our students to acquire problem-solving qualities, they will not just look for jobs after graduation; they will create them,” he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor also welcomed eTranzact’s focus on supporting female students in technology and called for collaboration towards establishing a fully functional incubation hub on campus. He further urged both parties to ensure that the MoU moves beyond paper to tangible implementation, adding, “Let this not be just a signing of a document. Let us make sure this relationship becomes a model of effective academia-industry collaboration.”
Rev. Prof. Paul Frimpong-Manso, Board Chairman of eTranzact Ghana Limited, expressed appreciation to the University for opening its doors to the partnership. He underscored eTranzact’s commitment to supporting UEW to become a leading ICT-focused institution in Ghana and the subregion. “We want to strengthen this relationship to make UEW a centre of cutting-edge ICT education and to produce versatile graduates who can integrate technology in whatever they do,” he remarked.
He revealed that eTranzact, a pioneering fintech company operating in Ghana since 2006, currently powers the digital banking systems of 14 major banks in the country and is eager to extend its expertise to support the training of young talents. “The world is changing rapidly with artificial intelligence reshaping industries. Our goal is to prepare UEW students to fit into this evolving technological landscape,” he added.
Prof. Delali Kwasi Dake, Head of the Department of ICT Education, described the partnership as a major milestone for the department and the University. He disclosed that discussions with eTranzact had been ongoing for some time and the agreement marks the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship. “We are particularly excited about the internship and mentorship opportunities, the professorial chair and the incubation hub that will emerge from this partnership,” he said.
Also present were senior officials from eTranzact Ghana, including Mr. Bright Kofi Affum, Head of Business and Mr. Eric Quarcoo, Chief Operations Officer. Both executives emphasised the company’s commitment to nurturing young Ghanaian talents in technology and ensuring that students gain the confidence and competence required to thrive in the modern digital economy.
The ceremony ended with the formal signing of the MoU and a renewed pledge from both UEW and eTranzact Ghana to work collaboratively to promote innovation, academic excellence and youth empowerment in Ghana’s fast-growing technology sector.
