Abstract
Art is a creative and silent way that helps children to express themselves unequivocally. However, various interpretations are assigned to a work of art by various people. These differences are seen in the assessment approach adopted by teachers which may greatly enhance the development or withdrawal of the child’s artistic talents. The assessment of art at the foundational levels of the basic education in Ghana is difficult and full of subjectivities and biases. The objective of this research was to identify and describe how assessment in art is practised in early childhood classrooms and their impact on artistic development of the child. This exploratory research utilized both qualitative and quantitative methods including a structured interview of teachers, extensive classroom observation, documentary review, and focus groups to gather data. Findings revealed dichotomous lapses within and cross assessors.
