UEW Alumni Elect Interim Executives

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), successfully held elections for its interim executive committee on Saturday, 1st February, 2025, paving the way for a revitalised and engaged alumni community.
With five key positions up for grabs, the eager alumni base seized the opportunity to reconnect, contribute, and shape the future of their alma mater.

The election proceedings unfolded smoothly, with four of the five executive positions contested without opposition. However, the race for the presidency proved to be the highlight of the day, drawing considerable interest and participation. Dr. Samuel Ofori Danquah emerged victorious over Mr. Hector Arnold Sam-Tagoe in a closely fought contest, securing 173 votes out of 277 cast. Mr. Sam-Tagoe received 102 votes, reflecting a spirited campaign from both candidates, each promising to champion the cause of their fellow alumni.
The new interim executive committee comprises a president, vice president, general secretary, treasurer, and organising secretary. Their primary mandate is to foster a sense of community among UEW graduates and rekindle the enthusiasm that has waned in recent years. The newly elected executives will serve a one-year term to lay the groundwork for a more sustained engagement beyond their mandate.

In an interview, Dr. Danquah, outlined ambitious plans to rejuvenate the alumni network, leveraging technology and grassroots mobilisation efforts. He announced the development of a digital app designed to re-register every UEW alumnus, regardless of their programme type or level of study.
The newly elected Interim Alumni President emphasised unity and collaboration. "We are both winners; it is actually the beginning of a herculean task. A task first to rebuild — starting with reigniting the interest of every alumnus. We are looking for them, we want to make them feel comfortable, and at best support them," he remarked.
Dr. Danquah revealed that the committee has mandated the establishment of district-level executives and regional secretariats throughout Ghana. "The mandate given to us by the Vice-Chancellor's committee is clear: set up district offices and a regional secretariat. Using the app, we will organise alumni data and build strong sector setups to connect everyone," he added.

Mr. Sam-Tagoe pledged his support to Dr. Danquah-led administration, emphasising unity and the greater good of the association. He expressed his belief in the capacity of Dr. Danquah to lead the association effectively. “Once he has won, I will render my support to him. The job will be done in the interest of the association,” he stated.
The mandate of the interim executive committee comes at a crucial time, as UEW seeks to foster a vibrant alumni network that can actively contribute to its growth and development. The new leadership is expected to devise strategies to encourage alumni involvement, whether through fundraising, mentorship programmes, or collaborative events that enhance the university experience for current students.
As the newly elected executives embark on their journey, the UEW alumni community watches with anticipation, hopeful for a revitalised connection with their university that will inspire future generations of graduates.
