M.Phil. in African Studies

The M.Phil. in African Studies is a uniquely designed postgraduate programme that integrates African Studies with Education, blending Africa-centred scholarship with modern pedagogical training. Grounded in decolonial perspectives, the programme challenges Eurocentric narratives and equips students with the knowledge, research skills, and teaching qualifications needed to address Africa's real development challenges and inspire positive social transformation.

Delivered by the Centre for African Studies, a service centre established in 2005 with over fifteen years of experience teaching liberal and African Studies courses across the University, the programme is only the third of its kind among Ghana's public universities. Unlike existing programmes, it embeds an education component that opens a clear employability pathway into teaching at Colleges of Education, Technical Universities, Universities, and Research Institutions.

Programme Structure

Year 1 combines core courses, seminars, and electives drawn from the three specialisation areas (minimum 30 / maximum 36 credit hours of coursework, plus 6 credit hours of seminars). Year 2 is devoted to independent, supervised research culminating in a thesis (21 credit hours), giving students hands-on practical training through interviews, field observation, and archival study. In total, students complete between 57 and 63 credit hours to graduate.
