Abstract

The mechanisms underlying the effects of physical activity (PA) on mental health (MH) are clearly understood, coupled with limited empirical evidence in developing regions, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This conceptualised review provides an overview of PA and MH. It sheds light on the current situation in SSA. Further, practical implications to guide public policy, professional practice, and research in the region are also provided. The main issues discussed are findings drawn from different studies and reports across populations from low-, middle-, and high-income countries with MH issues and the potential influence of PA. In this review, evidence on how context and personal factors may influence MH using PA as a protective strategy amongst different populations is highlighted. There is a dearth of empirical studies on PA and MH in SSA. Based on available evidence, more high-quality research is warranted to explain how and why PA engagement could serve as an effective strategy against MH issues in SSA. Empirical findings from different studies are crucial to promoting active PA participation to enhance MH, including public policy and research.
