Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Agribusiness Management

The BSc. Agribusiness Management programme equips students to develop the essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills required to become efficient and effective entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector, enhancing their competence in creating innovative small and medium-scale agribusinesses and generating youth employment. The programme is designed to cultivate entrepreneurial and managerial skills, or "agripreneurship",  applying traditional entrepreneurship concepts across the agricultural value chain, including production, marketing, processing, and distribution.

The programme responds to Ghana's growing agro-food systems and the country's drive toward a market-oriented, sustainable food system, addressing challenges such as high post-harvest losses, low technology adoption, and limited market access. It is aligned with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry's focus on SME development and export promotion, the Ghana Education Strategic Plan (2018-2030), the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP), and the Sustainable Development Goals on poverty eradication, food security, and quality education. The University's strategic coastal location and proximity to farming and fishing communities from Awutu Senya to the Mfantseman Municipalities further justify the programme, positioning it to support value addition and marketing within its catchment area.

The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical skills in agribusiness and food system management, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, and supply chain management, combining classroom learning with real-world application.

Programme Objectives

• Promote excellence in agribusiness and food system management.
• Train students in agribusiness and food systems, including the principles of agricultural production, food supply chains, and market dynamics.
• Equip students with practical skills in agribusiness management, economics, marketing, and technology application relevant to the agribusiness sector.
• Foster analytical and critical thinking abilities to address challenges in food production, distribution, and sustainability.
• Instill entrepreneurial, leadership, and communication skills to create and manage agribusiness ventures successfully.
• Equip learners with knowledge of global food systems and international trade, preparing them for the global market.

Practical Training

The programme includes practical laboratory training, field trips to partner institutions, and a six-month internship component in which students develop a business idea, generate a business plan, and implement it by creating a product or service for consumers in and around the University's three Winneba campuses. Students gain hands-on competencies in business development, business planning, and agricultural product and service delivery, supported by collaborations with institutions such as CSIR, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG), and Departments of Agriculture under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).
