Theatre for Development and Indigenous Knowledge Systems: Catalysts for Community Empowerment in Ghana

This study examines the synergistic relationship between Theatre for
Development (TfD) and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) as catalysts
for community empowerment in Ghana. Through qualitative participatory
research embedded in three TfD interventions, this study demonstrates
how complementary approaches facilitate grassroots mobilization, cultural
preservation, and sustainable development. Results from case studies in
youth theatre, environmental health, and agricultural innovation reveal
that TfD serves as a democratic platform for translating indigenous
knowledge into actionable community solutions while maintaining cultural
authenticity. The findings indicate that integration of TfD and IKS creates
a powerful framework for addressing developmental challenges through
culturally appropriate participatory processes that enhance community
ownership and self-determination. This paper contributes to discourse on
decolonizing development practices and advancing culturally grounded
approaches to social transformation in African contexts.
