Description

The programme is aimed at enabling students gain knowledge about the interaction between food, body and health under normal and special conditions. It will also equip students with the knowledge on the basic food groups, their nutrient contribution to the diet, and their selection to meet the nutrient requirements of family members. The programme also seeks to offer students the opportunity of making their training in the department practical and occupation relevant to reduce graduate unemployment. This will help reduce poverty and promote socio-economic growth and national development. The programme also provides students with deeper understanding of the principles and concepts of Home Economics and equips them with analytical and practical skills, which will enable them to improve the quality of life of themselves, their families, community members and the nation as a whole.

Above all, the programme will provide students with a foundation for understanding the relationship between planning, implementing, and assessing student learning in Food and Nutrition. Finally, the programmes will enable students to practice processes essential for success in content delivery.

Prospects/Career Options

The hands-on practical activities and education courses offered by the students in addition to the subject area courses in Food and Nutrition make this programme unique. Graduates of this programme will function effectively both as professional Foods and Nutrition Teachers/Lecturers as well as in other areas of employment such as Catering establishments, Dietetics, Nutrition, Food and Nutrition research, etc. The programmes open other avenues for employment in areas such as:

 

  • the Food and Beverage Service /Hospitality industries.
  • Institutional catering Services
  • Food and Nutrition research institutions
  • Food industries
  • Food business

Target Group

Holders of WASSCE or SSCE certificates from the West African Examinations Council who offered Home Economics, Food and Nutrition option and Chemistry, Biology, Economics, French or GKA as elective subjects are the main target for the programme. In addition, HND graduates in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management from the Technical Universities in Ghana with a minimum of Second-Class Lower division can be admitted to Level 200 and complete the programme in three years.

Entry Requirement

Admission into the programme shall be based on the general minimum requirements demanded by the University of Education, Winneba as well as special departmental requirements.

I. Category A: WASSCE Applicants

Core subjects: Applicants must have a minimum of grade C6 in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science.

Elective subjects: Applicants must have a minimum of grade C6 in Food and Nutrition, Management in Living and Chemistry or Biology or Economics or French or General Knowledge in Art (GKA). The overall aggregate for WASSCE applicants must not be more than 36.

II. Category B: SSCE Applicants

Core subjects: Applicants must have a minimum of grade D in English Language, Mathematics and Core or Integrated Science.

Elective subjects: Applicants must have a minimum of grade D in Food and Nutrition, Management in Living and Chemistry or Biology or Economics or French or General Knowledge in Art (GKA). The overall aggregate for SSCE applicants must not be more than 24.

III. Category C: Advanced Level Applicants

Applicants must have six ‘O’ Level passes (Grade 1 to 6) including English and Mathematics in addition to three ‘A’ Level passes including Biology or Chemistry or Agricultural Science (Grade A to E).

IV. Category D: Mature Applicants

Applicants must be 25 years by 1st September of the academic year they want to enroll on the programme. Applicants must also pass the Entrance Examinations for both the General Aptitude Test (GAT) and the Subject Area Test (SAT) conducted by the university.

V. Category E: Applicants with HND certificates

Applicants must have certificates in Catering and Hospitality related areas with a minimum of Second-Class Lower Division.  Such applicants will start the programme from level 200.

 

 

 

VI. Category H: Applicants with foreign certificates

Applicants with equivalent certificates from accredited foreign institutions will be considered for admission. Such applicants must have their certificates verified and evaluated by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
