Abstract

The research addressed a major pedagogical debate in primary and basic school science instruction: finding the most effective way to teach practical science concepts when full, individual laboratory equipment is unavailable.The study showed that live, teacher-led demonstrations generally offer a stronger direct connection for younger primary pupils. The ability to ask real-time questions and watch a teacher troubleshoot an experiment step-by-step fosters high initial cognitive retention. Conversely, video instruction provided unique cognitive benefits that live teaching cannot replicate. Close-ups, slow-motion replays, and graphics help pupils clearly see subtle changes—like precise droplet formations, micro-scale colour transitions, or gas evolutions—that are often invisible to students sitting in the back rows of a crowded classroom.
