B.Sc. Agricultural Science
Description
BSc. Agricultural Science is an undergraduate programme aimed at equipping students to develop the essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills required to be efficient and effective leaders in the agricultural sector. The programme develops the competence of students across all fields of agriculture, including General Agriculture, Crop Husbandry, Animal Husbandry, Agricultural Economics and Extension, and Agriculture Mechanisation.
Programme Objectives
- Equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to apply scientific principles of plant, soil, and animal sciences to agricultural production systems.
- Provide learners with hands-on experience in modern and sustainable agricultural techniques.
- Train learners to design, conduct, and present research that addresses agricultural challenges.

- Train learners with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will enable them to develop careers in agriculture.

Institutions Graduates May Work With
- Ministry of Food and Agriculture- the main government institution that recruits people with backgrounds in Agriculture.
- Environmental Protection Agency- mandated under the EPA Act 1994 (Act 490) to educate the public on environmental protection, with Environmental Education departments in all regional and district offices requiring a solid science background.
- Financial institutions - which recruit graduates from tertiary institutions and train them for various positions, including this programme's graduates.
- Non-Governmental Organisations- particularly those involved in advocacy, education, and agriculture, which require people with solid degrees in education to execute their mandate.
International agencies - such as UNESCO and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which recruit educationists to help execute their mandate.

Entry Requirements
Category A: SSSCE and WASSCE Holders
- Six (6) WASSCE credit passes (A1-C6) or SSSCE credit passes (A-D), including three (3) core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science.
- Six (6) WASSCE credit passes (A1-C6) or SSSCE credit passes (A-D), in three (3) Agriculture electives (General Agriculture, Crop Husbandry/Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fishery, Forestry, Agriculture Mechanisation).
- Pure science students must have credit passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Category B: Mature Candidates
- Must be at least 25 years old at the time of application.
- Must hold a Teacher's Certificate 'A' or SHS Certificate (optional for the second requirement).
- Must pass entrance examinations, General Aptitude Test (GAT) and Subject Area Test (SAT), organised by the University of Education, Winneba.
Category C: Holders of a Relevant Diploma
- Must possess a Higher National Diploma in a relevant subject from a recognised institution.
- Must pass the University's Interview.
- Note: Successful candidates in this category will be placed at Level 200 of the Four-Year Degree programme.
Category D: School Certificate / GCE Holders
- Must possess two (2) 'A' Level passes in Physics, Chemistry, or Biology.
- Note: Applicants with 'O' and 'A' Level results more than five (5) years old should apply as mature applicants.
Category E: Foreign Applicants
- Applicants with foreign qualification(s) are required to support their applications with GTEC evaluation reports.
- Must present two (2) letters of recommendation, at least one from a research supervisor and one from an instructor, along with a writing sample/portfolio.
