Ten students from the Effutu and Ajumako traditional areas have received scholarship packages under the University of Education, Winneba's (UEW) Vice-Chancellor's Community Initiative Programme (VCCIP).

The initiative reaffirms the university's commitment to expanding educational opportunities and supporting community development through higher education.

The beneficiaries, who received their awards at a ceremony at the Council Chamber on Wednesday, 3rd June, 2026, are Bright Inkoom, Christopher Nkrumah, Sakina Sardick and Norah Danso Inkoom from Ajumako. The component from the Effutu Municipality comprised Prince Osei, Wisdom Annobil, Calvin Apeko, Ernest Kweku Silva, Michael Duncan and Stella Ghunney.

Addressing the awardees, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, the Vice-Chancellor, described the scholarship as more than financial assistance, stressing that it represents hope, confidence and belief in the recipients' potential.

He reiterated UEW's conviction that no student with the talent, determination and passion for higher education should be denied the opportunity to succeed because of financial constraints.

"The Vice-Chancellor's Community Initiative Programme was established with the conviction that education remains one of the most powerful tools for social transformation and national development," he stated.

Prof. Mitchual explained that the programme seeks not only to support needy but brilliant students but also to develop future professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to the growth of communities within the university's catchment area.

He disclosed that the initiative forms part of a broader vision to nurture future doctors, engineers, computer scientists, teachers and other professionals from the Effutu and Ajumako areas through targeted educational support.

The Vice-Chancellor urged the beneficiaries to justify the confidence reposed in them through academic excellence, discipline and commitment to their studies. He warned that the scholarship could be withdrawn if recipients fail to maintain satisfactory academic performance.

He further encouraged them to use their knowledge and skills to contribute to national development after graduation rather than seeking opportunities elsewhere at the expense of their communities.

Prof. Mitchual expressed appreciation to individuals, corporate bodies, alumni, philanthropists and stakeholders whose contributions continue to sustain the initiative while commending members of the programme's implementation committee for their voluntary service and dedication.

Mr. Steve van Kamassah, the Deputy Registrar of the Division of Publications and Communication, indicated that the programme received 17 applications for the 2025/2026 academic year, of which 10 were selected through a competitive process.

He noted that the sponsorship is intended to support needy students from the Effutu and Ajumako traditional areas, particularly those pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes at the tertiary level.

Prof. Samuel Hayford, Chairman of the VCCIP, assured the beneficiaries that the university would closely monitor their academic progress throughout their study.

According to him, the scholarship covers beneficiaries' school fees and accommodation and will continue until the completion of their bachelor's degree, provided they maintain good academic standing.

Prof. Hayford revealed that the university would soon launch another component of the initiative as part of efforts to deepen UEW's impact on its host communities. He described the programme as a modest but meaningful way of giving back to the Effutu and Ajumako communities for their longstanding support and sacrifice in hosting the university.

The VCCIP comprises three key components: financial support for needy students, apprenticeship training and academic enrichment initiatives to prepare talented young people for higher education and professional careers.
