UEW Senior Members Undergo Training on GTEC’s New Standards and Norms

The Directorate of Quality Assurance, in collaboration with the Division of Human Resource of the University of Education Winneba (UEW), has held a seminar on the new standards and norms of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to strengthen quality assurance at the university.

The day’s seminar, held at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus, UEW, on Tuesday, 9th May, 2023, shed insight on the quality assurance management framework and regulatory standards in the tertiary education space.

Mr. Emmanuel Oware Nyarko

In his presentation, the Director for Quality and Compliance at GTEC, Mr. Emmanuel Oware Nyarko, iterated on the underappreciated role of quality and quality assurance in promoting high-quality education. He also underscored the difficulty in determining quality due to the varied viewpoints of numerous stakeholders in tertiary education institutions. He advised institutions to employ "fitness of purpose" in the educational system in defining quality to attain their quality assurance goals.  

He highlighted the need for the Management of UEW to dedicate more funds and human resources to support the Directorate of Quality Assurance in its work. He stressed that the core of the work of the Directorate includes overseeing the development and accreditation of curricula, monitoring, and evaluating them, conducting quality assurance research, verifying students' certificates and test results, supervising exercises in moderation, keeping an eye on examinations, and assessing student reviews.  

Mr. Nyarko asserts that rather than serving as an advisory directorate, the Quality Assurance Directorate must develop, oversee, or aid in the development of a university’s strategic plans. He suggested that the UEW administration set up academic and departmental quality assurance committees to work directly with the Directorate to achieve quality assurance goals.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Victor Antwi, who sat in as Chair for the seminar in place of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke, emphasised UEW’s commitment to continually enhancing quality assurance and service delivery to all stakeholders.

“The Directorate has over the years played the role of planning strategic and systematic activities in line with its mandate to ensure the fulfilment of quality requirements to external customers, third parties and management,” he affirmed.   

Prof. Antwi laid out Management's initiatives from the previous year to increase staff and resources to improve the Directorate's operations.

"Management does not have plans to rest on its laurels in terms of quality but is ready to decentralise the role of quality assurance to each faculty as enshrined in the Statutes 2020," he said.
