The College of Agriculture Education (Mampong
Campus) of the University of Education, Winneba was established by the
Presbyterian Church and the Scottish Mission in 1946 as St. Andrews College, at
Akropong-Akwapim, under the aegis of the Presbyterian Training College. The
College of Agriculture Education was transferred to Mampong-Ashanti in 1956, and
in 1995 integrated into the University College of Education of Winneba and
designated the College of Agriculture Education. Initially, it offered a 3-year
Diploma, a 2-year Post-Diploma and a 1-year Post-Diploma (B. Ed) programmes in
Agriculture Education. An additional programme, a 4-year B. Ed in
Agriculture
Education, was introduced in the 1999/2000 academic year. At the end of the
2000/2001 academic year, the 3-year Diploma and the 1-year Post-Diploma
programmes were dropped.
The College of Agriculture Education was
originally a Unit of the Division of Applied Arts and Technology Education and
functioned as a Department of Agriculture Education. In the 2001/2002 academic
year, the Department was elevated to the status of a Faculty and it was agreed
in principle that six new departments would be
established.
Currently, four of these departments are
operational:
- The Department of Agricultural Engineering Education
- The Department of Animal Science Education
- The Department of Crop Science Education
- The Department of Education Studies (Services Unit)
The following two departments are to be established later:
- The Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension Education
- The Department of Soil Science Education
