Do you Know that GENDER is different from SEX ?
- ** Gender is a term socially constructed and concepted. It refers to the social AND culturally based expectations of roles and behaviours of males and females.
- ** Gender roles and behaviours which are context specific are learnt and can therefore change.
- ** Gender also refers to instutional structures and male and female roles as dictated by existing power relations.
- ** Sex on the other hand is biologically determined and therefore, fixed and cannot be changed.
- ** When babies are born, it is their sex that indicates whether they are boys or girls.
- ** The norms prevalent in their society determine their perceptions, thoughts and behaviours as women and men, who wields mare power and who controls what.
- ** So that for example, women breastfeed babies. it is a role which cannot be swapped between the two sexes.
